Community sponsors continue to make local improvements possible

TIMMINS: July 10, 2013. The Timmins 2020 Community Strategic Plan has been underway since early 2012. Over the next several years, the plan will require numerous human and financial resources to implement its various strategies. The Timmins 2020 Steering Committee is committed to ensuring that not all the financial burden of its implementation falls on local taxpayers. To this end, the committee’s members have been hard at work seeking financial support from the public and private sectors.

Several local organizations have already made donations this year. As a member of the Timmins 2020 Steering Committee, Mayor Tom Laughren has witnessed this local generosity firsthand. “We’ve been seeing an outpouring of support from community organizations,” Laughren said. “It’s great to see these amazing partners coming forward and working together to help make our community a better place to live, learn and play.”

Now, the Steering Committee is pleased to announce that they have secured additional funding to support two Timmins 2020 projects: the Culture, Tourism and Recreation (CTR) Master Plan and the Housing Strategy.

The Timmins Family YMCA has pledged their financial support for the recreation component of the CTR Master Plan. Executive Director Wayne Bozzer said, “The Timmins YMCA staff members work hard everyday to promote healthy families and a healthy community. We are proud to help fund the Recreation Master Plan, and are excited to see positive results for Timmins’ recreation sector.”

La Caisse populaire de Timmins has donated funds to support the local Housing Strategy. Anne Vinet-Roy, President of la Caisse populaire, says, “As a uniquely Northern financial institution we are concerned with the everyday challenges that our members face whether they are residents or business owners, housing is a critical issue that affects everyone, and we want to be part of the solution.”

La Caisse populaire’s donation is being added to an existing pool of funds pledged to the Housing Strategy by other community organizations, including Attawapiskat Resources Inc., Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board, Goldcorp and Xstrata Copper.
